Preventive information

Preventive measures against domestic violence are in place in four of Amsterdam's districts: Oost, Noord, West and Nieuw-West. In each district two elementary schools provide information about domestic violence during parent's meetings. On a yearly basis we aim to provide assistance to at least 180 parents (male and female). Police and OKT are involved in this program. The main goal is providing information, sharing experience and nurturing self-reliance in parents, and women in particular, in order to reduce domestic violence. The program helps to improve connections between the informal helpers and formal organizations like police and OKT.

Trajectory

SHE commits itself to help some of the most vulnerable people in society. By raising an early awareness of problems surrounding domestic violence, SHE reaches vulnerable and often socially invisible people and provides for them an essential link toward formal help agencies. SHE provides support with every step along the way.

The main goal of SHE is prevention, through walk-in facilities, a social network and through activities like support meetings, language courses, cooking activities and other workshops. These activities are also a way to get in touch with other people in need of support. Finally, SHE makes sure there is no relapse by staying in touch with both the client and the formal agencies.

Younited Power

Younited Power is a work placement project to provide jobs for vulnerable people. This project's goal is to finds potential partners who can help participants obtain the last step in their empowerment process: financial independence.

Younited Power is a logical continuation after regular activities like language- and empowerment trainings, and projects like 'SHE in the house' (which aims to end social isolation). After three years, part of the returns of this project will be used towards supporting the other activities of SHE, in order to make SHE less dependent on subsidy.

Multi-problem families

Within families there may be many issues at the same time:

  • Domestic violence

  • Contact with police and justice

  • School dropout

  • Poverty

  • Neglect

  • Housing

The Home Empowerment Stichting provides an overview for the family, and puts them in touch with formal support organizations.
